| this massage special deals with classical tracked releases of one |
| of todays most advanced mp3 internet labels, monotonik (aka mono |
| and mono211). |
| |
| the original amiga demoscene .mod label was founded in 1996 by h0l |
| (aka hollywood). their goal was to obtain the status of releasing |
| the finest electronic music for amiga. they were influenced by |
| radical rhythms success, which was "the" elite xm releasing group |
| for pc that days. all of their members came from the amigascene, |
| worked with the protracker and traded their music either on irc or |
| via bbs. mono intially wanted to release another format besides |
| .mod only in "very special occassions", so the .xms and .its were |
| tagged differently. the releases got spread via bbs or aminet, |
| later on also by hornet where the releases found lot of downloads. |
| that was 1996. |
| |
| in summer 1997 h0l decided to create the sublabel "monotonik", |
| which should dedicate itself to minimal techno beats and weirdism, |
| but finally ended up more in an idmish sublabel. distance joined |
| and released eps which were deep and exciting, his releases became |
| the manifesto of what monotonik should stand for. mono was now |
| more involved with the pc platform since the amigascene decreased |
| in size, the releases were now lying on various ftps such as |
| scene.org, which is still today the most important ftp demoscene |
| server. |
| |
| new members joined and members from the original crew left; mono |
| became more and more successful. h0l did a lot of work and engaged |
| various guestartists from other demoscene netlabels who did great |
| jobs most time. finally the format .mod died same as the bbs scene |
| and in 1998 mono was renamed to mono211. |
| |
| in early 1999 h0l decided to cut down with releasing modules. the |
| new standard format was now mp3 which promised to be close to |
| audio cd in quality. mono211 was the very first demoscene label |
| which decided only to deal with mp3. this was a very courageous |
| step though it was discussed a lot in the scene. but seen nowadays |
| it was the right decision to increase monotoniks quality standard, |
| today it's supposed to be one of the most sophisticated netlabels. |
| some of the members are now doing vinyls and therefore quitted the |
| scene, so it's clear that monotoniks relationship to the demoscene |
| has reduced way much. through h0l's job for a game company he |
| travels a lot and makes contacts to new talented artists around |
| the globe. so todays releases mostly cover artists which are not |
| linked to the scene at all but make intelligent music. |
| |
| today everything seems to go great for monotonik. they participate |
| at art festivals, most members are working in the vinyl biz now |
| and monotoniks work is both very liked and respected worldwide. |
| |
| my relation to mono and at the same time to the demoscene started |
| in summer 98, in fact my first downloaded modules were from mono |
| and all were kinda unbelievable hits for me, the module format and |
| its possibilites excited me a lot so that i tried myself with |
| modules until today. finally i must say it was a very very hard |
| process in picking the right releases together which are supposed |
| to be the most essential ones. you must know that there're certain |
| rules a massage author is obliged to... but nevertheless i'm glad |
| to bring you a great pack of tracked music. |

| japanese ice climber aka bogdan delivered 2 releases to mono211. |
| on his second appearance he bascially zapped up tracks from |
| "bastard punk ass" zyad, and created 5 marvellous pieces of jazzy, |
| breaky, intelligent idmcore. ice climber wages war on the tracking |
| industry, and you shouldn't dare to miss his stunning guidance how |
| to "reinterprete" tunes in the most skilled way. bogdans latest |
| works can be heard on rephlex records, where he has released two |
| excellent albums so far. |

| how many times have i played this one - the very best 4 channel |
| minimal techno floorburner ever tracked imho, still rocking my car |
| hifi. this track is dedicated to chicagos minimal/techhouse wizard |
| robert armani (remember "circus bells") which is most obvious ;) |
| tasty acid bits march straight forward accompanied by a straight |
| beat and eerie closed hihats, check out how much groove can be |
| zipped in 80k. dreamfish is nowadays known as hoffman and still |
| active as member for monotonik. |

| ramone released several hiphop and jungle tunes on mono211, i |
| picked out a freaky dedication to the oldskool. ramone's "back 2 |
| the oldskool" is a urban hiphop cutup - beats jamming with a |
| delightful jazz saxophone. very groovy at all and a masterpiece of |
| sampling. |
| see how hiphop works and join the people dancing on the streets! |
| last thing i heard about ramone was that he's nowadays producing |
| music for pron movies, but i ain't sure. |

| are the laudatio of one of the most banging jazzy mods composed |
| ever. the blacksista mon lukas nystrand aka mortimer twang brings |
| one of the most sophisticated jazzy floorburner grooves. king size |
| percussion merge with a piano hookline from francy boland you can |
| hardly get out of your head ... mortimer did a great job at all on |
| his mono appearances, you should check out every tune and finally |
| state "i see that now" for yourself ;) mortimer twang is now doing |
| house for the bGirlArmy. |

| a very dark of piece of atmospheric techno, very decent both in |
| construction and result. shadowy, almost gaseous layers surround |
| a subtle piano riff. the spooky tension is enforced with the |
| always cumbersombly rotating sinebass. one of the only three |
| releases of whiskas at mono, it was kinda difficult which track to |
| select here since i also could choosed the most excellent "as in |
| cockroach" too. i don't know what daniel hansen is doing today. |

| vim! may not get lost here, he has done very excellent work so far |
| for mono211, either mp3s and in former times modules. i choosed |
| this ep for the special purpose that i may review two excellent |
| tracks besides one single release =) track one, "c-bunches", |
| combines noisey pads with with warm strings and a trippy beat. in |
| the beginning very shuffled the track developes a sunny feeling |
| with that hawaiian guitarstring. the second track "parannoying" is |
| a tasty melange of a hooky housemelody with later on tweaking acid |
| beats, somehow a modulic state of consciousness ;) vim! will |
| release a cd for surgery, an australian idm label. |

| distance is maybe the artist who is most associated to monotonik, |
| not only since he released lots of material there, but also |
| related to his wonderful 100 limited cdr#2 (i'm a lucky owner), |
| released specially at the monotonik website. "klusterpunk ep" |
| covers various styles, you can find lot of idm-, ambient-, clicks- |
| and even 4/4 scraps. each track is very unique. |
| the first track "ix pen" is also configured on vinyl at focus |
| records (got a promo copy) - a weird warm almost idmhousy piece. |
| the second track "l.a. kluster" is some sort of ambient piece - |
| clicky, glitchy sinewaves buzz around in a tender body. third |
| track "a walking simmer" takes us back to made-up grounds, a very |
| relaxed housy beat hides itself and beautiful layers unfold |
| themselves. light again. but back to darkness in track four, which |
| is called "soundscapes 2". the tracktitle is programme, similar to |
| "l.a. kluster" we can listen to strings, pads and metallic waves. |
| the last track "yea" is a short n easy idm-cut up which makes fun. |
| distance aka lackluster still appears on monotonik and is active |
| in the vinylscene for focus records and m3rck. |
